I applied to a university course and I just emailed someone to ask what's happening as I have not heard anything and it's been ages since I applied
she said that they are assessing lots of applications and will get back to people within the next two weeks...however the interviews are scheduled for march. I thought people usually get a few weeks notice for an interview? or is it a few days only?

you say march but it's only the start of march at the moment. just be patient and hopefully it will be good news
I'm guessing around a week or a week and half notice

If someone is unemployed, I would ask them to come in on very short notice - 1-2 days, and be reasonable about it.
