I want to work, but can't as I'm a sahm, so I woud like to do some work tutoring at night. I have my masters and live in a middle class to wealthy area. (Teaneck area) How much should I charge?

It depends what age you're tutoring and how good you are and how much experience you have. If you're just starting out, you probably want to charge less and slowly work your way up.

Do you have a teaching degree? Just having a master's degree does not ensure that you will be able to tutor. Then again, some ppl. can tutor younger grades without a bachelor's degree so it all depends. Also as the other poster asked, do you have experience tutoring b/c that would obviously make a difference?

I think there really is a large range in how much you can expect to get for tutoring..

OP here -
Thanks for your interest

I have a BS in Elementary Ed and a Masters in Literacy (AKA reading). I taught in the public school system in Maryland and NY, for 5 years before I got married and had children.

I was always on deans list, national honor society, etc.

OP again -

I taught reading and social studies and I did tutoring while living in NY for a girls school there, for struggling readers, pro bono, for a year.

Ok amother you DEF seem qualified to me & I think you should have no problem charging $50/hr at least for starters to get your name out. What were you thinking of charging? More or less than that? Also, would you be willing to go to ppl's homes or would they have to come to you? If they come you, you would need to be sure that your kids were with your DH or otherwise entertained b/c it would not work for them to be interrupting your sessions.

Anyhow hatzlacha!!

With your degrees you can specialize in teaching reading/kriah if you are interested. I was thinking you could charge $60/hr and increase your rate when your name is out.

I grew up in Bergen County. In the 1980's, experienced certified teachers made $60/hour for high-school level subjects and test prep tutoring. I'm not sure what the going rate is now, but even in the current economic climate when people are more careful about expenses, there has been some inflation in the past 30 years! I agree it would be a good introductory rate to start your business, then increase once you have your name out. You don't seem to be talking about test prep, but just for context, Kaplan in your area charges $80-191 per hour for private tutoring.

I paid $65/hr for SAT tutoring in the Northern NJ area just last year & I have paid general tutors $50 hr especially ones who were just getting their names out. I wouldn't recommend limiting yourself to only kriah/reading tutoring since you seem to be experienced with general tutoring & if you are trying to get your name out & you have experience in general tutoring why not offer that as well? Bear in mind that there are many tutors available in the area..

I'd also suggest that you stay on top of Teaneckshuls (I assume you are already a member & if not, join NOW) to check for posts of other members who are seeking tutoring for their elementary school children.

Hatzlacha!

I would suggest to give people a range, ex: $50-$75 an hour and explain you understand that everyone is in a different financial capability (in more appropriate wording). When I tutored I found that I got a stronger by being respectful of what people could handle and therefore overall got more work. Just know what your base is, that you won't work for less than X$'s, before you offer a range. And good luck!

Hmm, none of the tutors/specialists I've ever used for my kids have ever given me a range, they have just stated their price & I either have accepted their price or went with someone else (if I felt they were too costly). I think when you offer a range, no one will offer to pay the higher price b/c they will feel silly paying $75 when they know that others are paying $50. Just my 2 cents..
