Depends on the girl. My DD age 21 months insists on putting on her own hairbands.

I'd say by about age 7 or so, depending on how long, curly, the hair is. Anywhere from 5-8

Depends on the hair. Some girls have easy hair, and they can put it back nicely around age 5 or so, some girls have thicker/curlier hair. I have one teen dd whose hair *I* have trouble dealing with!

Different amother here. Should I be teaching my 7 year old curly head how to make her own hair? It is thin but very curly and it is hard to make it look good.
It is usually messy by the time she comes home anyway so does that mean I should let her do it herself and be messy from the get go? I know she'd be thrilled.

There is no 'should', no rule. IME I'd say at age 7 most mothers are still fixing their dd's hair for school, although there are definitely a few in every class who did it themselves.

I'm sure every child is different ... you teach them whilst their yet young ... but till they can figure out how to brush it where they look like a mentsch [around 10] - it's the mom's job
keep in mind there are kids 6 years old who can do a fine job & girls 15 years old that don't ~ just sayin'

I think 7 is fine to start brushing and making a ponytail, even with difficult hair. Of course you keep an eye on it and "touch it up" if necessary.

Depends on the kid, the kind of hair and the style. My 9 y.o and 7 y.o. do their own brushing and putting in product. They can put clips in on their own and headbands, but I do ponies and braids.
