But if the middos aren't based on Torah, then how can they stay?

You're absolutely right, too, Crayon. I don't think they can even get started without Torah.
(By the way I'm still trying to answer the question myself.) Maybe to learn Torah - then someone would learn about working on their middos too.

Put the words:
self esteem teaching
into google, and you'll find Lesson Plans, how to teach it, etc. etc. etc.

It's a hard one.
I would think to teach yiras shomayim is the most important, because then hopefully everything else falls into place.
And I know it's a feeling, not a practical lesson, but I hardly think the most important thing will be something you teach in a one-off lesson.

I dont really care what google search finds. Instilling self esteem in a person takes a way of behaving with them, you dont teach it in a 45 minute class lesson.

I would say respect for elders especially my husband and myself. It is hard but when accomplished it is well benifited. My parents engrained it into us since a young age and I can't believe what I see by some people that respect was the last thing but torah and learning all day is the main thing. Respect I think is really important.

yes, because your parents were a model of respectful behavior, themselves. and children copy what they see.

I read that the single most important message we (mothers and fathers and teachers) have to give over to our children, both at home and in school, is "ata bechartanu" - the fact that we are a chosen nation. Without it, says Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg (Ner Israel) a'h, everything disappears.
He asks - why is belief in Moshiach's coming one of the 13 principles of faith. His answer is that without Moshiach the whole concept of "ata bechartanu" is a joke. We are the lowest and we are oppressed - where is the ata bechartanu? He says Olam Haba is not enough because that is an individual experience. Ata bechartanu is only seen from the concept of Moshiach.
