What can I soak them in, to get the gook out? I've tried detergent, vinegar, etc.

The best way to clean your can opener blade is to use an old toothbrush loaded with anti-bacterial dish soap and scrub vigorously. Your can opener blade should be cleaned frequently to prevent bacteria

I spray it with easy off and let it stand for a while. It looks almost brand new.

When mine get to gunky, I just chuck it and buy a new one, they arent that expensive that I should spend so long trying to clean it

I scrape the gunk of with a sharp knive and keep going round and round - do not forget it needs a little oil to prevent rusting ...

when I used to have those types of can openers, my favorite thing to do was clean it with a toothpick. it's such a good feeling to see all the gook come out. sort of like sweeping a really dirty floor and seeing all the crumbs in the dustpan.

(I now have a tupperware can opener - no, dewyt didn't pay me to write this Wink - my mil bought it for me after my son got stitches when he cut himself on a can(this one doesn't leave the can with sharp edges). the gook doesn't get into it)

Also run it on a paper towel a few times...that helps clean the gears.
