I sometimes (including right now) see job postings for behavior specialists. Does that automatically mean BCBA? You'd think if they wanted a BCBA they'd just say so, but if not that then what does it mean to be a behavior specialist? This interests me a lot as I already work in that field and have some training/experience in behavior techniques but don't know what it would take to call myself a "specialist." I have considered becoming a BCBA but last time I checked the requirements seemed to intense for me to take on right now and I had a job I liked that I didn't want to leave but wouldn't have qualified as a BCBA internship.
So, what is a behavior specialist?

I would imagine it refers to having a BCBA since simply being in the education field doesn't exactly qualify as being a specialist.

Obviously education field doesn't = specialist. What I'm asking is what DOES = specialist. I am quite sure that if they wanted a BCBA they would say so. I'm sure they would take a BCBA if one applied, but I'm wondering if there are any other qualifications that would earn the title "behavior specialist."

Your best bet is to call and ask.

My experience, both as a mother of a child who receives ABA, and the mother of another child who is a BCBA is that "behavior specialist" is just the term that some places use for BCBA.

But ask them.

I wonder if they're using that term to refer to the tutors who work under the BCBA---- not much training required for that, but not much pay either. As far as I know, there's not a lot in between ABA tutor and BCBA--- although we did have a gal on her way to her BCBA who was promoted within her company from tutor for my daughter to supervisor (still under the BCBA who ran the company). Then she got her BCBA and became a public school intervention specialist- I miss her, oh well.

Call and ask!
