My almost 3-year-old isn't asking "why" questions yet. Is this normal?

does he even understand the word "Why?"

do you ever ask him "Why...?" kids repeat back what you say to them.

I agree to start asking him why questions..
why do we need a jacket out today? why are we putting on your shoes? why do we eat supper?
see if that helps.
Although I don't know if it's normal or not that he doesn't ask why, I would still say to be safe, you try getting answers out of him to why questions.
Also, you can wonder out loud, "I wonder why Tatty isn't home yet?" etc... to show what curiosity is.

WOOPS! Sorry, Motek was right, I misread (which is what happens when I try to read while the kids are jumping on me)

If he isn't asking why questions but is asking other questions, I wouldn't be worried (maybe happy, as I inferred earlier).

Does he appear to be caurious about htings, like my ds loves to get the step stool to watch me fix meals, even if it is just pouring water into oatmeal. Also he loves to watch things out the window.

Another thought, does he point things out, like theres a truck, theres a hammer. Not every kid is always looking for an explanation.

Many times when a child asks why they are really saying "Tell me more about this" or "how does this work" or "I like hearing you say that word"

So I agree with cdawnr that as long as he is asking other questions he is probably ok.
