If someone is paying for your college tuition - not a scholarship, a person who is either giving money to the school for you or giving you money to pay to the school - does that count as income for reporting purposes?
I am asking because in the Going Through Divorce forum I discovered that my husband won't be obligated in child support because he has no income. This burns hard because obviously it was not my choice for him to have no income, I never had any intention to support the whole family on my own. Plus, he is going to have his needs provided for gratis by relatives who support his academic goals and will be housing him, feeding him, and paying his quite expensive tuition while he starts a long college program. While I work my tuchis off to provide for myself and my kids at a job that barely makes ends meet while also doing most of the work of raising them. Even though he is not actually earning income, the value of what he is receiving from this relative is for sure over $40,000 a year - which is more than my total income that I work for. It's probably wishful thinking but I wonder if this would help my case to ask for child support. I mean, let him take out a loan while he's in school if he has to - most people don't have such relatives and need loans to pay for their tuition and life expenses. So why shouldn't he take a loan to provide for his children instead of getting off free?
Am I dreaming here?
