We're planning on taking my mother in law out for her birthday (about 15-20 people)-it's a big birthday so we want to go somewhere nice, but not crazy expensive! Any ideas? TIA!

As much as I enjoy Carlos and Gabby's, I would not consider that a nice place for an adult's birthday dinner. Plus I don't think they can accommodate a party that large.
What about the new Amsterdam Burger? http://amsterdamburger.com/am-li.html

Thanks for all the suggestions, we also have Carlos & Gabbies here & not so fancy, Chosen Island sounds familiar, has anyone been there recently? What about the other recommendations, hapinah, ahuvah's grill, Amsterdam burger? Some of the people going are not religious, so I really want them to think it's a nice place/ good food, thanks!

chosen island is chinese, has a very nice ambiance, great food, and not too pricey. If you are looking for a fancier steak house, try prime bistro. Amsterdam burger isnt so fancy, but has waiter service and is nice and good food. ahuvas grill has good israeli food, but isnt as fancy as chosen island and prime bistro.

I recommended Ahuva's grill. It's nice but not fancy. I'm not even a meat eater but I recommend it because my uncle wanted to take me and my husband out to dinner when we visited New York last summer. He is totally secular and was clearly somewhat annoyed that we had to go to a kosher place. He is a real foodie and has his favorite restaurants. But he found Ahuva's grill and loved it so much that he kept going back even when he didn't have kosher guests.

Traditions is a great option. Has a small party room on the side which would be perfect. Food is very good and it isn't overly expensive.

I second Hapina.
I've been to Ahuva's Grill once, and the food was inedible.

Traditions is a very good option, solid food, a bit nicer decor/ambiance than hapina and Carlos and Gabby's, a bit cheaper than chosen island
