My preteen son has always had an occasional stutter problem. I'd like to help him if I can. I know this is a tough issue to cure, and perhaps its best left alone. I'm not sure if it's gotten worse recently, or I'm just paying more attention to it. Any advice would be welcome.

My dd had it too. I just ignored it and stood there patiently. Bringing attention to it only makes it worse. It's completely gone now B"H.

There is therapy for stuttering. They have different tricks he can use to help him speak fluently. In young children there is therapy that actually cures it although it only cures a certain percentage of children.
So if its very slight and not bothering him then maybe leave it or ask him if he would like to try learning things to help with it. If it is more significant its worth taking him, he is a child and doesnt even know there is something that can help him.
