My son's ortho sent me to an oral surgeon to have 2 expanders done in his mouth. I left the office a tad confused. I would like to hear from those that had experience with this issue. Thanks!

Yup. My DD had one.

It's not a big deal.

What are you confused about?

She needed surgery for it? They told me each tooth is $750 and he needs two of them. No one I know used the oral surgeon they recommended or had this done.

My dd had one placed on top and one on bottom. Each had a different schedule for turning. The orthodontist we used for braces placed them.

Is it maybe a space maintainer? Expanders make the pallet bigger. Space maintainers keeps the space after a tooth is pulled, so that the space is there for the adult tooth.

They also call this expanders- where they put a chain inside the gums and connect it to the braces so the teeth grow in the right direction.

One of my dc need a space maintainer due to overcrowding. No braces yet. They will cement something to both sides of the mouth and have a wire conncect them. This will stay in for a few years. I am paying $650 for this. It includes regular checkups.
