I was in a car crash. We are B"H all OK, and replacing the carseats.
What about the booster seats? My husband feels that the boosters just hold the kids in place, but the seatbelt does the real restraining so the boosters should be less affected by the crash than the carseats.
Can someone please provide a technical explanation as to why the boosters should be replaced as well?

Don't guess with safety. Please call them. Insurance will cover cost of the booster anyway.
This is what I've found, that boosters needs to be replaced for moderate but not minor crash. Car seats always need to be replaced even for minor crash. Don't guess on what yours was. Please please call.
NHTSA recommends that child safety seats and boosters be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level of crash protection for child passengers. NHTSA recommends that child safety seats do not automatically need to be replaced following a minor crash.

Since boosters hold the seatbelt and yoru child in the proper positions: a crash can compromise the structure / materials of the seat, which means that if you have another crash, it may not hold your child or seatbelt in the right position, which could allow for serious injury to the child, either from the seatbelt directly (which is why we have boosters in the first place) or because your child is injured because they dislodge from the seatbelt completely since they and/or the seatbelt can't be held properly by a compromised booster seat. Please call the manufacturer and ask if your booster needs to be replaced - they will know whether the kind of crash you were in could have compromised their own booster seat.
