What's wrong with taking the bus? There's a Jewish run his from Lakewood to brooklyn, and there is a New Jersey transit bus from Lakewood to Manhattan.
$19 each way. Cheaper than driving on your own. Even cheaper than hiring someone to drive for you.

Neither option really helps the mother get to the burn unit in Staten Island...

Staten Island isn't so far from Boro Park. Perhaps she can take the Lakewood bus to Boro Park & a taxi or Chesed of Boro Park to Staten Island.
How can a mom not sit with her child all day? Does she have family that can bring her??
