What kind of thread is this? What if my name was Yenta or Orly? What if my husband's name is Dudy? And why are you all anonymous? Is it embarrassing that you don't like those names?

I would never give a name that has a strange meaning in another language like
"Einat" = "a nut"
or
"Osnat" = Oh Snot
etc . Both are great names in Hebrew, but kids are cruel and so are relatives sometimes. Just think about what a name sounds like before you give it.

Sagi - Saggy
Dudu - 'nuff said
Dror - Drawer
Now. Put 'em all together and you've got - Saggy Doodoo Drawer!

Oh, come on, OP.
You don't think this thread can be potentially insulting to all the women on this site who happen to have been given these names?

Me neither until I moved to Israel. It's fairly common here. I just asked my co-worker and it means "happiness". Go figure.

I'm sure you didn't mean to offend anyone with this thread. But it hurts my feelings to see that one of the names we are considering for our baby is something that you "would never use."

don't make it personal, then. don't forget, names are for a reason - either for beloved family or b/c the parents like the name. what's the diff if some anonymous poster doesn't like it? they don't hve the same feeling you did - or the same aunt or grandmother.

Yes, I kind of think this is a rude thread, but one name I do not mind remarking on is Nimrod. Why did so many secular Israelis give this name? Was it a dafka thing???
I hear it's not in fashion anymore. b'h
And I think Yenta is a really nice name, but it would be hard to give it nowadays with the assocation. Although I know people who do and since they are very chassidishe and have very chassidishe friends, and I don't think the kids get any comments in school ...(unfortunately people like me who saw Fiddler on the Roof, unlike them, did a double take when I first heard that name in the frum world...It is out of ignorance, really)
Yes, some names in other languages have different associations...they might sound great in Hebrew or Yiddish but when in a certain country, well...as Hila pointed out.
