this is what GE does.

nothing here indicates a problem for full time use. But you will be loosing out on features that you paying for (other than the sabbath mode feature...)

http://products.geappliances.c.....17357

On refrigerators with Sabbath Mode, activating this mode will turn off interior lights, control panel display, ice/water dispenser, sounds, icemaker, and any advanced features (ex. Door Alarm).

The compressor will run on a timed defrost when in Sabbath mode so it will not defrost based on the length or number of door openings.
The door can be opened or closed without causing any lights, fans, switches, etc. to be turned on or off.
If there is a power outage during Sabbath Mode, the refrigerator will return to Sabbath Mode.

Is it bad for the compressor to run on a timed defrost.

Mine is Electrolux only refrigerator and only freezer. It doesn’t have water dispenser
It does have an ice maker though. I need my ice, so I guess I’ll have to remember to turn on and turn off Sabbath every week.

My main question was, is it bad for the motor/compressor, etc.

A repairman told me that it can ruin the fridge if it's on that mode all the time.

Mine is on Shabbos mode all the time. I have it for about 3 years. So far so good. No issues.

You'd need to understand how your fridge (not the GE fridge) functions differently on Shabbat mode.

from my understanding - it will either cycle on and off more that it otherwise would, or less, depending on how frequently your family opens and closes the door of the fridge.

I just got a new fridge and put it on sabbath mode...
The lights are still on but not as bright.
Is this normal that the light stays on the whole time?

Yes, that is normal. My GE fridge does that.
