I'm thinking of starting a spin-off to ask if anyone has a 20% coupon to spare.

Meh. What is the purpose of a wedding present anyway? I’ve always thought to help out the new couple.
If they don’t want ‘boxed gifts’ - cash/cards it is.
You of course can give nothing, but since almost everyone gives a gift, IMHO it’s not tacky to give some direction.

I hear they're having a special on Brimstone dinnerware.

To be equally tacky right back just give him a gift card and don't tell them that you loaded only $1 on it

It is more common not to give wedding gifts here.
How can it not be tacky to tell someone what you want if not asked?

No way! I might just get blue, red and green sets. You never know when a guest might drop in.

It's tacky to ask for a gift in all situations.
So yes, I would find that odd.
But a preference for cash/giftcards is pretty standard. No one needs 6 personalized challah covers and 7 washing cups none of which are to their taste...

Asking for a gift card is odd. Signing up for a bridal registry is helpful to all the guests who want to buy you a gift but don't know exactly what you want.

DH gives great gifts. Everyone else generally give me gift cards unless they spot something they like. Since gift giving is both ways, I think it's fine on how little or how much they want to spend, I'll give them the same amount for their birthday.
Plus, I always give/get cards. Those are way more meaningful to me. They usually aren't light stuff, they are heavy and long and make me want to cry about how lucky I am.
