My 6 year old did great in the early stages of Kriah. He easily recognizes and reads every letter and Nekudah. However, now that he is learning words, he is struggling to read the accurately.
He verbally, clearly explains to me every rule, and when I tell him to spell a word for me he does it accurately. He also writes down words with ease. But he needs to put in a lot of effort to “read” a word, even if it’s in a special Kriah flash card.
He wears glasses for astigmatism. We just double checked his prescription and it’s correct. I was advised that he might need Vision Therapy. Anyone familiar with it?
Does anyone know a Kriah Tutor in Lakewood that is familiar with it, and can evaluate my son to know if he needs vision therapy or it's a Kriah issue?
Anyone familiar with the benefits of Vision Therapy? Can anyone recommend a provider in/near Lakewood?

Vision therapy works on the eye muscles and how the eyes move. It is highly doubtful that a kriah specialist would have any idea how to address this. You need to find someone who is trained in this area specifically. I know of many OTs who work on that type of thing but sadly I’m not in the tri-state area. I would start by speaking to your pediatrician and/or eye doctor and see if they have anyone they recommend. Ask around, maybe a friend or neighbor knows of someone.
Good luck!

I would suggest flying to Dr Alexander in London at all costs. He's specializing in that and helped sooooo many kids. Don't wait till it gets harder to cure and when they'll be learning more. I had great success and actually borrowed money to go. After 3 annual visits, my son is off prism and is doing great bh. He's using a regular Dr at this point and his vision issue is fixed.
Good luck!

Look into getting prism glasses rather than vision therapy. Don't wait until he's older, as I have done with my child, and it was much harder to fix.
There are many excellent doctors in NY and NJ. I used Dr Nayor in Westchester, I was very pleased with his diagnosis and service. My child wore glasses for about a year and can now read fluently.

My sons school has a kriah specialist who noticed my son has a tracking issue and sent us for vision therapy. We were told that prism glasses is a quick fix but not for long term. That doing vision therapy will help correct this issue for good. We did therapy for a year and dr. claims his eyes are perfect now. Now we have to get a tutor for him.

So if he graduated from vision therapy and his eyes are perfect, does he have an easier time reading? Just curious. Of course one would still need to make up for lost time but it should be easier if that was the cause of the problem.
There are definitely children who have difficulty with reading because of vision issues, but it can be hard to tease out the causes of these difficulties. Don't expect a kriah tutor to know. A good person to consult would be a developmental optometrist, if you can get a recommendation for one who is known to give honest assessments and doesn't just prescribe vision therapy for everyone (I really don't think most therapists are scammers; I just think that some people are prone to looking for specific issues and then seeing them everywhere)

In Lakewood, Dr. Borkowski can check for vision therapy issues, even though he does not do the therapy. I like to evaluate by someone who does not have a stake in the game, so to speak, I feel they're generally more honest.

Thank you. I will check him out by Dr. Borkowski. Any other references near Lakewood will be greatly appreciated.

there are different kinds of vision therapy. 15 years ago when my classmates were learning how to write in script I was still struggling with kriah.
finally I was diagnosed with dyslexia. functional at this point bh.
but there was one therapy that helped me alot. and I've met other kids from my community there at that therapy center. the therapy was a vision therapy aimed at processing whatever I was seeing in the right order. it took a while. helped a ton, although kriah is still a huge struggle for me to this day.
I love to read and am quiet intelligent, if-I-may-say-so-myself.. English was a lot easier than kriah though.
I have been to a million places and so much money spend on this issue and bh, it did help.
I did great in school. top of my class in most subjects. graduated with honors.
there is always hope.
I guess this is just a post of encouragement.

First, try enlarging the font. You'd be amazed how often that solves the problem.

Check out Torah4children.com. They have a Kriah evaluation online. It will detect if it is a Kriah issue, and at what stage.
