I'd be interested in taking an online course in journalism, and/or writing. does anyone know if I could apply for the kind financial aid that you can get in regular classes?

I would imagine it depends what college you're going through.
When I was in Touro, I took classes by in classroom and about one online, which I could get financial aid for. However, I was a regular student there. Why don't you check out the college's website and call and ask?
