My parents were far from perfect but I like to believe that they did their best with the tools that they had.
IMO, these days, we have so many more resources available to help us be good parents.

I only read the first page of responses, and I share a lot of what others wrote, like the no physical punishment, etc.. But I think people have to realize (again this may have been said in subsequent pages) that everyone is a product of their generation. In previous generations, physical punishment, if not the norm, was not extreme. It's like comparing people's attitudes to african americans now and 100 years ago. It is very easy for us to say we are horrified at people being treated differently based on their race, but that is partly due to the fact that society has changed so much. I don't think we can take too much credit to ourselves or lay too much blame on our parents.

This is from someone whose father physically and emotionally abused the family - I'm sure not as bad as many, but certainly worse than many. He also lost his father at a very young age, and who knows what other factors may have affected him. No one went for therapy in those days to deal with anger, etc..

My mother always worked, and I am bh a stay at home mom. Besides for that I pretty much try to model my home after my parents
