Hypothetical numbers :
I got a rebate check from a retailer.
I get 2% back on my year long purchases & the check was for 200 dollars.
How do I figure out how much I spent over the year ?
I can't do 2% of 200... I'm trying to figure out the total.
Any help, I'm stumped.

200 = .02x
200/.02 = x
x = 10,000

Is your question what number is 200 2% of? I think 10,000. It’s been a while since school days though.
ETA Oh I see amother above agrees with me. She did it in some cool brainy way though 🤓

If 2% is 200, then 10% would be 5 times that, equaling 1000. If 10% is 1000, 100% is 10,000.

2/100=200/x

I think you could also take whatever the 2% is and times it by 50 to get your total.

/ means "divided by." You could also use the symbol ÷.
For example, 1/2 is the same as 1÷2, or "one divided by two."
It is easier to do the math if the fraction is written with the numbers directly above one another rather than on a diagonal, but it's hard to type that way on the phone.

200 dollars is 2% of what? So if you remember your algebra days, is - =. What - X, of - times.
200 = .02 (2%) * X.
Divide both sides by .02 and X = 10,000.

2 percent or .02 of however much you spent is 200. So we could do .02 times however much you spent is equal to 200. When you put that in an equation it is .02 x = 200 you divide on both sides. .02 x ÷ .02 becomes plain x and on the other side 200÷.02 is 10,000. Now you have x=10,000. X was the amount of money you spent this year.

I think of these problems like this:
%/100 = is/of
Look for those words in the word problem:
2% is $200 of _____.
Now plug the numbers in:
2/100 = $200/______.
Cross-multiply (this is easier if the fractions are up-and-down instead of diagonal).
This means you multiply the top number of the fraction on the left and the bottom number of the fraction on the right.
Then, multiply the bottom number on the left and the top number on the right.
The two multiples are equal to one another:
2 x ____ = 100 x $200
After we multiply the two on the right of the equal sign, it looks like this:
2 x _____ = $20,000
We want to know what _____ is, so let's get rid of the 2 x on the left.
As long as you do the same thing to both sides of the equal sign, it's ok.
So let's divide both sides by 2.
________= $20,000 ÷ 2.
Or, _____ = $10,000
Edited to give more white space.

The general formula goes like this: a percentage equals the number that is X% of Y, or x/100 = I/O (I learned it as "I for Is and O for Of" - so 5% OF 400 IS 20 in formula form would look like this: 5/100 = 20/400)
So in your case, you're trying to find the "of" (as in "what is 200 2% OF?") - you have the rest of the numbers to "plug in" to the equation.
2/100 = 200/x [I'm using x here because "O" is too confusing). Cross-multiply: 2x = 20,000. Divide both sides by 2 and you get x = $10,000.

You are all working way too hard
200 2%
Hence 98% must be 9800

THAT is genius!
Although I am in awe of the above explanations. Totally over my head, and I consider myself somewhat intelligent. Just not with numbers.

This is by far the easiest and most intuitive way to find the answer. I have no idea why it got a hug.
Although my answer would have been that half of 2% is 1%, so just divide 200 in half (result is 100) and add two zeroes

Agreed. I'd go even simpler
2% is 200
1% is 100
100% is 100x100 which is 10,000.

I've long ago stopped wondering about the hugs people give...but that aside, if this works, and I am pretty sure it does, it is actually quite brilliant and simple, if I do say so myself.
