I noticed some wet rust on a face spray bottle (or other distorted color). My kids spray this on their faces and now they have chapped skin due to winter weather. Do we need tetanus boosters? I assume not and this is overreacting..

1. Rust is on the outside, probably from sitting on a wet surface, not inside.
2. Even if rust were on the inside, and even if it could be propelled outside, the spray is not penetrating the skin.
3. It’s not the rust that causes tetanus. It’s germs in the soil that the proverbial “rusty nail” lies in. “Clean” rust is not a hazard. “Clean” rust, or iiron oxide, is used as a red pigment in makeup.
4. Prevent rust by keeping steel cans away from damp or humid locations and/or coating the bottom of the can with Vaseline. Keep the surface it rests on clean by placing the can on a coaster, saucer, or flat plastic lid from something like an oatmeal canister.
5. The can may not even be steel but aluminum. Test it with a magnet to find out.
6. If stored in a damp place, the bloom on the can may just as likely be mildew. Just wipe it off.
