my doctor was discussing that perhaps I should go on weight loss medication.
he said I should come back for a consultation
I am just very curious and would like to know now,
what are the risks?
does it really work?
how long does it take for it to work?
what about becoming pregnant, during or after?
are there immediate side effects?
any and all thoughts and info would be appreciated
thanks

It depends of how overweight you are and your health overall. Go for the consultation and consider getting a second opinion. Ask here when you have more specific questions.

I know some (if not all maybe) appetite suppressant medications are not allowed anymore as they were seen to cause heart problems.
Before taking any medication look closely into any side effects.

I was on phentermine. Works great. No real side effects except insomnia sometimes.

It also depends on which medication he is recommending. Different ones have different side effects and risks.

My husband was on diethrypopolin lost 20 pounds in 3 months.
It's just for a few months and you stop.
No side effects that were noticeable.
My daughter tried a fenfen version. That had slight side effects. Hands tingle, I think slight mood swings. You start a low dose and move up.
That the doctor said is chronic medication. You have to take it or you'll gain it back.
The meds have a bad reputation from previous dangerous ones.
Just be clear on what you are getting.

Caffeine is an appetite suppressant. Many diet pills contain caffeine, so try drinking real coffee in the early part of the day. Drinking water, esp. 20 minutes before a meal, suppresses appetite.

Wellbutrin is good for mild appetite control and to help manage emotional eating. You need to do it with a dietitian and a therapist to make it really work, though.
The problem with Wellbutrin, is that when you stop taking it you go through a period of wanting to eat everything that isn't nailed down. You have to make sure that everything in your house is healthy and low carb/low calorie.
Make sure you read the PDF info (or Web.MD page) before taking anything, and ask your doctor as many questions as you can. These are not magic pills, they are serious medication. If you mess up your metabolism you'll have just made things 10 times harder for yourself.
