You were just trying to make conversation or get a reading on where she's holding.
Perhaps training yourself to ask more pareve questions would give you better clues.
Questioning the lifestyle mismatch put her on the defensive. A parve version would be to ask if she is happy with the school or does her kid like it. You can get a wealth of information by how she answers.
