Has anyone been involved in opening a new school?
I’m looking into opening one, and I have no idea where to start.

With like minded-people.
Why do you want to start a school? What need do you see has to be filled? Who can help you fill it?

Where are you planning on opening it? See the legalities of opening a school in your area, location, funding, insurance, materials, demand, employees.
Best of luck!

I've done this.
Step 1: Find like-minded people and form a strong committee.
Step 2: Determine if there is indeed demand for such a school.
Step 3: Explore the legal obligations.
Step 4: FINANCES! Idealism is wonderful but it all comes down to money at the end.
Step 5: If you have the first four criteria in place, you can start the process of planning the details.
Finding a suitable location and hiring principals should be the first things on your agenda.

Also, you need to assume that it will be at least two years of planning. You'll need funding to carry you through the first year. You will have to hire a principal a year in advance and give him/ her time to recruit staff and plan.
