My four and a half yr old has a bad habit of biting her nails that started around 6 mo. ago and It's REALLY bothering me. I keep telling her to stop but it doesn't help. What should I do?

Bribery. A chart, etc. or you can paint her nails with a nasty tasting thing which doesn’t really stop the habit. Encouraging a new good habit such as reading, singing, sewing, dancing, can help ease her frustration which is silently causing this to happen.

Two thoughts on this:
1. I realize that she is young, but have you tried finding out why she feels the need to bite her nails? Does she do it as a reaction to something (frustration, nerves)? If so, try to help her mitigate those feelings.
2. Maybe you could promise to paint her nails if she "keeps them nice". You don't need to use anything garish or too adult, nailpolish that is clear or light pink would probably make her feel just as "grown up" as anything else. You could have a chart (like someone mentioned earlier), and maybe she could earn having her nails painted for Shabbos. Then make sure to comment often on how nice they look now that they aren't all bitten up.
Hatzlacha!

I still bite my nails. Nothing my mother ever did helped me to stop, especially that bitter nailpolish.

telling a person to stop a habit will never help. why is she doing it? is she nervous or upset about something going on in her life? the more and bigger deal is made about a negative behavior, the more it will continue and be harder to stop it.
