Has anyone ever heard of a minhag to fast on the day before Yom Kippur (in addition to YK itself)?

Huh? Isn't it a mitzva to eat on erev yom kipur to specifically show that when hashem tells us to fast we fast and when not we don't?

It's a mitzvah to eat erev yom kippur.
Where did you hear that it’s a minhag to fast? And how is it possible to fast 2 days in a row?

My husband fasts from after rosh hashana to yom kippur
He does not fast erev yom kipper though as it’s a special mitzvah to eat
(I’m not sure why he does this, I think he heard somewhere that it’s something special to do)

The only place I’d imagine it would only maybe apply is if there is a dateline issue.
Like Japan, Hawaii or other locations. Some did this in Shanghai (but it was the day after not before).
Yom kipper is the only yom tov outside of eretz yosroel that is one day.
I’ve heard that there was an idea to fast 2 days for that reason. But it really isn’t done.

I think I learned that if you eat on erev y”k it’s as If you fasted two day’s. Maybe that’s what you heard.

כל האוכל בתשיעי ומתענה בעשירי כאילו התענה בתשיעי ובעשירי - one who eats on the 9th and fasts on the 10th, it is as if he fasted on the 9th and the 10th.
It is a mitzvah to EAT on Erev Yom Kippur. If anyone is doing otherwise, אל תהי צדיק הרבה!

Some people fast on the Aseres Yemei Teshuva.
I think I remember reading that Rabbi YY Herman did that.

I'd never be able to!
I don't even fast on Tzom Gedalia because it leaves me feeling weak for YK fast.

OP here - I'd never heard of it before, I'd bedavka grown up (ffb ashkenaz right-wing modern orthodox) understanding it's a mitzvah to eat on Erev YK. A family member of mine encountered a young woman who said she had to fast on Erev YK and I was very confused, figured I'd poll the gantze imamother mishpocha!

I've heard of fasting during aseres yemai teshuva - usually till chatzos.
That's why we do slichos at least 4 days before R"H - because there are 4 days of AY"T where you MUST eat and can't fast: R"H (2 days), Shabbos, and Erev Yom Kippur. If one fasts on at least 4 days of slichos, then 6 days of AY"T, you got your 10 days.
But you are NOT HALACHICALLY ALLOWED to fast on Erev Y"K

I learnt that eating erev Yom Kippur is like fasting, and that fasting 3 days in a row is a big segulah, so as a girl, I once fasted the day before erev Yom Kippur, so that it was counted as a 3 day fast.
Maybe thats what op means?

I have only heard something like that in the context of a Holocaust survivor... She was in hiding and didn't know the Hebrew date. Long story short, she discovered it was the 2nd day of RH and from that she calculated the day of YK. However she was young and didn't know if YK was 10 days after the 1st or 2nd day of RH. So she fasted for two days to make sure she got the right date.
