Kinda embarrassed to ask because it seems so simple....but trying to figure out why my crumb toppings never come out ok. Either they don't "crumb" right and I'm left with a sand or dough like mixture. Or it gets soggy in the over. I'm not eye-balling it, I Google and use an actual recipe that's some variation of flour, brown sugar, and margarine. (Rather not use oats). Any suggestions?

1 cup of flour
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
Mix by hand until everything is moistened and you get the crumb like texture. Do no overmix.
