This doesn't address the behavior issue, but when ds was 3 he hid my car keys in his toys once. After that I got the Tile which goes on the key ring and has an app on the phone. It's worked pretty well.

Our kids liked to use real car keys in their Cozy Coupe... Was many hours of aggravation before that discovery...
