amother [ Pansy ] wrote: | Ok, OP, here is a question you might find up your alley:
How many pages are in a book where if you add up the amount of digits used for page numbers, the total comes to ninety-eight digits? | this can't ever work actually. Basically the first nine pages use nine digits in total. From number 10 thru 99 we've got only 2 digit numbers. So when you subtract 9 from your 98 digit total number we've got 89 so can't work cuz you must be left with an even number that's divisible by a 2 digit number. There's 90 numbers between 9 and 100 where you start hitting 3 digits. So if it would have been 99 digits total it works with a 54 page book. It's actually super simple to figure this one out lol. I guess I'm also a genius

amother [ OP ] wrote: | Isn’t the number of digits supposed to be an odd number if it starts from 1? |
Correct! That was just a warm-up.
Here's another one:
A gigantic hot-water urn filled with boiling water is emptied through 17 faucets that are welded to its bottom. The water in the urn boils at a steady pace, and steam forms steadily, as well.
It takes a single hour to empty the urn when eleven faucets are left open. How long does it take to empty the urn if all 17 faucets are left open?
OP, you have 3 minutes to solve it. After that, anyone can answer.

Here's another one OP. We'll give you 3 minutes to answer.
There are two bags of candy. One bag has 32 candies, and the other with 51. Mike and Joe play a game where they take turns removing any amount of candies from either one of the bags. The one who empties the bag of the last candy wins! Assuming Mike goes first, how many candies must he pick in order to ensure that he wins the game?

The one who takes out the last candy. (one bag will empty first, but the winner must take the last candy from the remaining bag.)

Do you have a photographic memory? I really wish I did. I was considered smart in school, but I think the older I get, the less I remember, so now I'm not so smart anymore.
I think memory is the key to everything.
My other question is for you and Jewish Philosophy - as someone with only a cursory knowledge of the main players, who is your favorite philosopher, and why? What was a riddle he solved that impresses you?
