google wants more people to use their search engine (google.com) - that's the only 'something in it'- they attract ppl by providing them with free services.

people pay to have higher priority on a search engine when certain keywords are searched for. more people using their services=more people using their search engines=more money from companies for them.

I already downloaded it about 2 weeks ago.
but talking in IM isn't new for me. I've done it in Yahoo, before there was yahoo voice which is also fairly new.
all you need is yahoo messanger and a microphone.
I bought a headphone that has a mic attached, it's kewl. I used to speak to my friends alot like this, it was fun.
