When I posted about frustrating dc behaviors, everyone yelled pandas.

And we tried to go after it. Spoke to a couple of pediatricians, did bloodwork- including Lyme. Spoke to an infectious disease doctor, nutritionist, therapist and more. Fast forward and at the annual dental appointment we discovered dc needs a ton of work including root canals. And guess what- dc who used to get strep throatvery frequently, only had 1 infection in months bh (And has since been exposed numerous times).

My theory is that the strep bacteria and the dental issues were connected causing a low level infection that spiked in times of stress (we would see a surge in challenging behaviors after Yom tov and other times sleep schedule was off). And those were the times she would usually test positive and get treated.
B’h my child is doing so much better now (yes, she’s still a kid and therefore still has her “issues” so to speak, but no where compared to a year ago).

Sharing our story for those of you dealing with “pandas” like behavior- dental health is another area to explore.

I want to add that dc was so disregulated that we had no clue about her dental issues because she would never complain. She would just go haywire... same when she had a head full of lice as in a zoo of large crawling bugs... we only knew about her strep infections when her behavior went so crazy... (she never got fever. The first time she had strep after we fixed her teeth she actually had fever which was interesting).

B’H her emotions are much more in check now and she mostly a happy thriving kid. Bh we have our yummy kid back!

Thanks for sharing. Strep overgrowth is associated with cavities, the bacteria that most often causes cavities is strep mutans.

My pandas child was my child that had chronic strep throat. And also very bad teeth (likely due to reflux)
I am curious to hear if other pandas children have teeth with lots of cavities as well.

Yes. Both are symptoms of microbial dysbiosis, iow imbalance of good and bad bacteria. I’m sure their are other unifying causes at play, but that imo is the most basic one.
