My 12 year old and 10 year old sons asked me to buy a $15 yoyo that "all the kids have".
What would you do?

These type of things my kids buy with their own money if they really want it

I would buy, if it is low priced and about once a year.
If kids are asking every week for some tchachka, then they have to pay for it themselves.
Would help them earn the $$$.

$15 for a yo-yo? Um, no.
But my kids don't usually ask for stuff like this.

I get for them, but they have to earn it.

Yes I do. I think it’s unfair to tell them that they should sit on the sidelines while the entire class plays with it by recess. In our schools the fad usually lasts the whole year so it’s 10-20 a year. Really no big deal in the scheme of things.

I buy it within reason. Kids shouldn’t have to earn every little thing. A big type of purchase would be more of a discussion

Yes, I would. I thought this thread would be about real expensive fad items, like the electric scooters etc. I wouldn’t buy those so quickly.

I try to. I don't always get to the store in a timely manner. Its a small price to pay for kids to feel included.

If it’s something cheap, I’d get it if I like it.The more expensive stuff, they have to earn , buy with own money, or wait till a birthday / Chanukah.

Yes. I’d rather save the battles for the important stuff. Anyway, I don’t believe buying things equals spoiled kids.

I would buy it. Probably a few for each kid. It’s important to buy kids things just because you love them and want them to feel good .

This one seems like it's the same idea for $5 cheaper. |
When my kids were into yo this there was a difference in how they worked. The more expensive ones were easier to go tricks. I could buy them the $5 one but it would frustrate them and they would barely use it.
(Honestly $15 is not a lot for a good yo yo. Try to use a cheap yo yo snd it is very frustrating)
A $10-15 yo yo. Yes. I think it’s a healthy activity. I buy lower end things my kids like that other kids have. Electric much less. Like I won’t buy scooters or electric games. But something like yo-yo is healthy.
I see it as a good activity and builds a skill.

That's a typical thing they could buy from their pocket money/bubby's gift/self-earned money.
I would encourage them to save up for it and buy it if they want it.

I buy stuff for my kids when they want something not so that they are socially acceptable, but because they want something.
They never ask for anything, they know we aren't rich, so when they ask for something I know it's because they really really want it.
