The beginning will be hard, but once your newborn gets a little older, you can put them on similar schedules.
I received this tip many years ago and still follow to this day. Let the baby cry for a bit while in middle of caring for an older one. The baby won't remember the extra bit of time he waited, but the older one will remember that you left him hanging to run to the baby. |
The younger the child, the more it needs the mother's attention and love. The older child might remember but the younger one will have it in his subcounscious. A newborn is vulnerable and a older child is able to calm himself down which is a skill you only acquire at around 4-6months.
That being said, 11 months is still tiny and needs loads of love.

It's ok for either of them to cry for a minute or two while you finish what you're doing. You will have 2 little human beings who need you a lot; you can't split yourself into 2 people. Just do your best. If you need to be doing one thing, and can't do another thing at the same time, it's ok. No one will die from crying in their crib for 3 minutes, or waiting for a few minutes for a diaper change. Pat yourself on the back for raising 2 human beings, even on the hard days!

A small tip is to be proactive. If you know the baby is due for a feed in a half an hour, try to find a safe space for your older baby to play in. if eleven months baby is due for food whilst your nursing, prepare finger foods such as shredded chicken, bread, fruits and veg. depending on how capable the baby is and watch your older baby whilst nursing younger one. New borns are not supposed to be up more than 45 min in a stretch so hopefully it should work out. try to put your older baby to nap at least once a day together with newborn.
Look out for the calm and peaceful times and you will be surprised it happens often.

Thank you all so much for the tips! I'm not responding to each one individually, and will almost definitely be too overwhelmed to report back in the next few months but I am noting all of them.
