I just made whole wheat challah ... subtracted the eggs and merely added some extra water and some flax ... came out quite fluffy ...

do you buy ground flaxseed or grind your own, and if the latter, what do you use to grind it?

I bought already ground ...
you can ground it with a mortar & pestle I suppose ... never tried it though ...

you can use a coffee grinder for flaxseeds.
I used to make egg-free w.w. challah. just substituted 1/4 cup water for each egg
