There was this funny comic strip (can't remember which one) where the mom (or maybe it was lucy from peanuts?) tells the kid, "If you ask why one more time you're really gonna get it!". Kid stops and thinks for a minute. Then: "How come??"

I asked her why do you think, BTW. Her response was, " I don't know, why do you think Mommy?"

just wait till you reach the age of "why not?"
why can't I go out to the mall with my freinds?
why can't I buy this short skirt?
why can't I stay out till midnight?

I think it's a sign of intelligence that he realizes and is ready to admit that some of his whys are just reflex responses to my statements. He is perfectly well aware that he's not asking because he doesn't understand. He also knows that any real why of his gets answered.

They are exploring that is why they are asking.
After the 3rd why in a row disrtact em and talk about something else.
If you think why is bad wait until they ask stuff like "how come its raining again, didnt the grass get wet yesterday...?"

Ah, I misunderstood. I figured that if he said that his question was silly, it was because you were telling him that his questions were silly. Which would be terrible. My bad!
