I have my kids school melava malka coming up. Also don't know anyone. How important is it to go?

It's really nice to go.

I just had DD's school's melave malka last week. I sat at a random table, met new people, and had a really nice time!

It's such a great opportunity to get to know parents in your child's school, connect with school staff, etc....all benefits your child (and you enjoy, too.)

Also, as one of the moms that heads the melava malka every year, we put in a lot of work for months in order to give everyone a great time! Our first priority is to make everyone comfortable. We know that especially new mothers don’t know so many people, but this is how you meet your kids friends parents and develop an ongoing relationship with them that will hopefully last throughout their elementary school years.
We seat everyone according to grade, and keep in mind that there are many people who don’t know each other!
Say “hi, I’m sarah Cohen, my son is Chaim, who’s is your son?” And take it from there!
We also work hard on a program that will make sure there isn’t too much free shmoozing time so that you won’t be sitting there bored!
Go! You won’t regret it!
