All you really need is a location (can be your dining room), food, clothes and hat for the bar mitzvah boy and teffilin. Everything else is extra.

1. Shul - check w your husband - about the date, and which shul, call the shul to see if the date is available, ask which caterers they use and call the caterer to make arrangements
2. Hall - look at which halls are available on the dates you need, and if the hall comes w a caterer or if you need to book a specific caterer, decide on the hall, caterer, menu
3. Tefillin ( some start putting on a month before), will your son be leining? (Check with your husband)
4. Photographer/video, music, decorations for hall and shul(center pieces, table cloths etc) , sweet table if not included.
5. Check with school , what do they do for bar-mitzvah boy - possibly small event breakfast in school, what do you have to arrange, pay for ? who can you invite for kiddush/ for seuda (some school have very strict rules)
6. Once you have all info do invitations, either print or evites, make list of who you are inviting
7. Bar-Mitzvah boy - suit, hat, etc
8. Rest of the family, clothes, etc
9. Plan what do you need for the day of the simcha, make up?, hair for your girls?

Other than the tefillin, I would start by dividing the Bar Mitzvah into two parts and answering the following questions:
Shabbos:
1. Are you sponsoring a kiddush in shul?
2. Is any family coming in from out of town?
3. Do you need/want to host Shabbos meals and for how many?
Bo Bayom/Party:
Are you planning a separate weeknight event?
If so:
1. Will there be music and dancing?
2. How many people approx will be invited for this event?
3. Where will it be held? (shul, hall, restaurant, etc.)
4. Are you having it catered?
Once we have answers to the above, I will be happy to provide a more detailed "to do" list based on my past experience making 3 Bar Mitzvahs, and I'm sure others will as well.
