DS, 18, earned a few thousand dollars last summer from 2 jobs; both withheld fed and state income tax. He didn't earn enough in the year to really owe that much in taxes so he wants to file for the refund. The CPA who does my taxes wants to charge more than it's worth to help out with my son's--we don't want half of his refund to be a fee to the accountant!
Is it easy to file directly? Can it be online? Does the refund take longer to come like that? Anything I should know before he gets started? Thank you.
Also, will the social security and medicare withholding be part of his refund, or just the income tax?

I actually recently saw something about doing it on IRS.gov. if it's not complicated, the only way you're going to really know and he's going to know is to try it

Did your accountant do the return yet? Or is he quoting a fee before he started it?

I second free tax USA. They’re the best at getting me refunds and they don’t scam you. I believe they are fre to file federal return and like $14 to file State.

FICA taxes aren't refunded but they do count in terms of building up his account.
The form for a salaried person is very easy to do - but keep in mind that if you claim him as a dependent and the the exemption, he can't take the personal exemption since you have already taken it.

There are no more personal exemptions.

return?
Can I claim my child as a dependent if they file a tax return? Your child can still qualify as a dependent if they file their own taxes. They will need to indicate that someone else claims them as a dependent on their return

There are no more personal exemptions, but parents can still claim the kid and get either a child or dependent credit for him. The kid would have to indicate on his return that his parents claimed him as an exemption. He still should get a standard deduction higher than his earned income.
Don't give wrong tax advice on the internet as amother.

If your child made under a certain amount if you go to irs.gov and search freefile there are many playforms that will help you file for free both federal and state taxs.

Op, if you do want to claim him on your return, and I assume you do, make sure that he does indicate on his return that he's your dependent.
