Vent, why do schools charge so much to apply

Our school charges around that but applies to tuition if you're accepted. It's better than keeping it but I still don't like that because it means it's really expensive to apply to more than one school--if you're accepted but choose the other school then you're just out the money. My thought for the reason is maybe they need to pay staff extra to review applications? But that's not happening if it's applied to tuition...

I get they they want serious applicants but if you're not accepted and you don't apply elsewhere, your child will be stuck without a place.
