I've adopted a number of Israeli cats, and they have been excellent pets. The ones I rescued as abandoned baby kittens had no problem adapting to a home environment. The ones who grew up on the streets and then decided to be house cats had to get over their inbred fear of humans, took a while to settle down, but were also excellent pets.

Answer to your question: People who are born and bred in the city and especially people who have no contact with animals have zero understanding of which animals are our friends and which ones are a hazard.

In the past large wooden ships always had it least one cat on board. You can imagine the enourmous damage mice/rats can do to a ship at sea. The whole ship including sailor's lives and cargo worth thousand and thousands.
No wonder sailors viewed cats as a good omen.

Honestly. they keep the mice/rats away, so the rodents don't go gnawing through products, and peeing, and defecating all over the packages, which is quite a health hazard in itself. At least cats use a litter box, in one spot. They are very clean animals. You can not control where rodents go. I would rather shop at a store that has a cat patroling, then have rodents take over...

Perhaps TMI, but mice use urine to mark their territory; as a result, they are almost constantly peeing wherever they go. Their urine can contain a number of potentially harmful microorganisms.

As unappealing as either option may sound, you're actually safer with a cat lounging around the vegetables than a mouse running through them.

Annie was obsessed with fruit, vegetables, and berries; she would steal them off my plate. But most cats aren’t.
