There was a hotel on Crown Street near Albany that had been a hospital before that.
Hatzlacha superette - I was a regular customer of theirs
Ess & Bench on Kingston
Going to get dollars from the Rebbe
Empire Kosher used to be an Associated supermarket. I heard that way way before that, it was a movie theatre.
When President Street by Utica had regular parallel parking
There was a shul on Eastern Parkway, I think in the 900 block, that was in a very old building with a domed roof and with memorial plaques from the 1970s. Much later they tore it down and put up an apartment building with a shul in the basement.
Also my late husband lived in CH before it was Lubavitch. He remembered a theatre on either Crown or Carroll - I can't remember - near Utica Ave. He would go there when he was a little kid.

Singer's Appetizing on Kingston Avenue, that sold pickles and pickled tomatoes practically out of the barrel, sliced lox and sable for you on order, and was run by a lady with a number on her arm, who was so smiley and cheerful.
Friedman's grocery, run by little Mr. Friedman, who spoke only Yiddish, and his daughters Rivky and Sheivy. Rivky could serve you and add up your bill in her head quick as lightening.
Noble Drugs, who made his own cough syrup so we could have kosher syrup.
The Haitian (I think) dry cleaners on Kingston and Empire, who had copies of Ebony in the front of the store. The store next to it that sold curried goat (yech.)
Berkowitz's candy store, later replaced by a shoe store.
Raskin's fish store and the dairy restaurant, can't remember its name.
The toy and stationery shop on Kingston and Crown (or maybe Carroll) where we bought our school supplies and birthday party gifts.
And "Stablilization", which I never figured out what it was for but it was run out of a storefront and you went there in the evening to do arts and crafts and such stuff.
Anyone remember any of these??? |
Friedmans grocery is now kol tuv. There was a stationary store on the corner of union and kingston as well which is now sweet expressions, and the Haiti guy from nosh world is alive and well but works in Raskins fruit currently.

(L)owens bakery (the L fell off before I can remember) is now Kingston bake shop.
Where the jcm is was an apartment building. On the ground floor was Lipsker’s grocery.
Totally Her was sterling electronics
Kettle and chord was Auction Mart.
House of glatt is a new meat store that still hasn’t opened.
(580) crown condos was the crown plaza hotel on top of the “mountain”. I remember my friends and former neighbors who arranged a sefardi minyan there.
At the corner of the block was a hospital (but it closed before my times).
And so much more.

Albany Bakery main branch where everything was baked, was where apple bank is now off eastern Pkwy and Albany. Their second location was on Kingston between Montgomery and Empire. Now it’s either Flamms or the rehab.
