My sons have Israeli citizenship because I do and because they were born in Israel, but we’ve been living in America since my oldest was 5. They are regular JPF American boys who will not be serving in the army but will want to go to yeshiva in Israel, and I know this ben mehagrim complicates things. I’ve read up on it and know they’ll require a special deferral on a year by year basis, but I’m worried that A. they won’t be able to get that deferral after year 1 since it’s not guaranteed and B. They won’t be able to live there after they get married.
I’ve heard that renouncing citizenship is a massive pain and not guaranteed. Does anyone have experience with this and can advise what is the best route to go to avoid complications so my sons can have the freedom to learn and live in Eretz Yisroel like all their American peers?
