Wait is the a/c broken or they have no a/c?
I would literally quit.

They need to at least bring in portable a/c.
That's not a normal situation.

No a/c. They took over an old building which has no a/c.

But they already missed 3 days of school because they weren't ready, they can't do it to working parents to cancel another.

But it's Pikuach nefesh.

They're really stuck.

It's really complicated. Because I'm a mom of these kids and I have to work. I finally got to work after 3 days off. I cannot have school closed tomorrow.

But, I also am not ok with teachers having to work under circumstances like this, and students going to school like this.

If I didn't have to work I'd keep my kids home, but I really cannot.

I really hope they don't cancel.

But I also really hope they do even though I'll be stuck

Honestly, I would rather host the kids in my living room and babysit than trying to teach under these circumstances. But it’s obviously extremely complicated with transportation and taking responsibility to vet houses. I don’t know what the answer is. But I have been lying on the couch unproductive for hours, am totally knocked out.

Basically, the school has a beautifully renovated building that was supposed to be ready for the school year but now is not.
They rented a public school from the district to use in the meantime
They were supposed to start school on Thursday, but the public school building was not available until today. For whatever reason, the public school has no air conditioning, and the last couple of days were hotter than anyone expected for this time of year.

For sure! I can't even fathom. I am really upset that this is the situation.

I don't want to say this as a Mom who needs school, but, don't go in. It's dangerous Can't Believe It .but then I'm kicking myself because I need my daughter out.

But ya they gotta figure something out. This is not sustainable

Kids actually passed out today.

When I was in school in the 90's, we didn't have air conditioning in the classrooms.

Oof, sounds like such a difficult situation and OP you are a really good sport and dedicated teacher to even consider going through with this!

I guess I would try:
1) bringing a huge insulated bottle of ice water and drinking as often as you can (I know it's hard to remember while teaching)
2) wearing a neck fan, like this: https://a.co/d/bkhLu2F
3) asking the school to rent portable a/c

And see how much any of that helps.
You can't be going home every day nonfunctional 😩 that's really not fair to you.

They're allowing it because they need to have school. Many parents need to work.

I am with you. I was there only half the day and it was HOT! I felt so bad for my kids, they came home overheated and upset.

We didn’t either at some points, but school was canceled whenever it was above 80 from what I remember. And honestly, it’s much harder to be teaching than to be a student. Students are sitting down - not on their feet, can drink and go to the bathroom as much as needed, etc. teaching takes a lot of energy.

Why can't the school rent portable AC's? No AC in this heat is unacceptable.

The parents should demand that the school rent portable ac's. My kids school did that when the AC system in their new building wasn't working yet.

Apparently the city doesn’t allow window units, fire hazard, old electricity, from what I heard

Any moms can offer to host school for a few days?
I don’t work now and I think that’s what I’d do.
I’m a former teacher and would be hopping mad about this.

I’ve really felt bad for working parents through this whole saga. It obviously didn’t affect me, since this is my job.

But staff and students in that heat is just dysfunctional. I don’t know what the answer is. But girls were really getting sick.

There are options other than window units. There are companies that do temporary AC for commercial buildings. There's no unit in the building. The unit looks like a trailer, it's outside the building and many pipes attached to it going in to the classrooms.
Windowless units are also an option.

I will ask, honestly I wonder if parents would even sponsor. I would chip in if money was the issue.
