At what age did you start solids with your baby and what did you start with?

We started at 4 months because the pediatrician said we could. We used mostly mashed-up table food and foods that are already a puree-like texture (yogurt, applesauce, creamed spinach).

Does it matter what you give first? It could be baby cereal or the Jared fruit/veggies. There aren’t certain things that are better?

Start with high quality protein and cooked veggies
Baby cereal is garbage and the jarred stuff is mush. Real food is best for jaw and mouth (speech) development

Our pediatrician told us to give green veggies first, then orange ones, then fruits later, so she wouldn't develop a taste only for sweet things. They also say to not give complex foods with lots of ingredients at first, in case the baby has an allergy -- that way, if the baby has a reaction, you know what it was from. Also to talk to the doctor before giving foods lots of babies are allergic to (like peanut butter or eggs), especially if people in your family have allergies or if the baby has eczema.
And we avoided cereal with rice in it because we're worried about the arsenic.
But really, as long as most of her nutrition is coming from milk, I think the solid foods are just about trying out different tastes and textures and learning how to use her mouth.

Starting with sweet food isn't recommended because then they develop a taste for sweetness and won't take other food as easily, so I wouldn't start with applesauce or even sweet potato.
I start with mashed carrots and squash from the chicken soup, avocado, oatmeal mixed with breastmilk or formula. Later on I add banana, applesauce, sweet potato. And then even later the chewy food like scrambled eggs, mashed chicken, etc.
