Where can I buy shekels in Tri State area? Anyone have any experience doing this?

Talk to your bank, many of them can purchase for you with a few days notice. You can also go to an exchange compnay such as CXI, often located in NYC or local malls. The US airports do have exchange booths, but rates and fees tend to be very high. Common wisdom is to exchange as little as possible in the US and to use an ATM card in Israel for much better exchange rates. I exchange a small amount to have cash on hand when arriving and then head for an ATM.
