Did they do a rapid strep test or an overnight throat culture?

Had this with dd and the rapid was negative but the overnight was positive. It cleared up a day after starting antibiotics.

Could also be a post-virus inflammation, which should hopefully clear up within a couple of days.

For those that had transient synovitis diagnosed was it all through blood work?

No. Bloodwork was normal and no fevers so we knew it was extremely unlikely to be osteomyelitis or septic arthritis. It lingered so long though so we did end up doing an MRI (under sedation since he was a toddler) to make sure we had the correct diagnosis.

Inflammatory markers were normal too? (ESR, CRP?) my child had intense pain and not only couldn’t walk, but couldn’t even move for a day. R/o septic arthritis and osteomyelitis but we never got to the bottom of it. F/u with rheum who said it may have been toxic synovitis. But we dont know for sure.
But in my dc case, inflammatory markers were quite elevated.

No, transient synovitis is diagnosed by ruling out the other possible causes for the symptoms. Blood tests and x-rays will be normal. It can take a few weeks to resolve.

Check your mezuzahs!
There was a story about 9 year old girl who suddenly stopped being able to walk on a Shabbos afternoon, her father took all the mezuzahs off and sent them to a sofer and took the child to the ER. After waiting there for hours she suddenly said put me down, I can feel my legs, and she was able to walk again. At that moment the sofer called and said that I finished checking all the mezuzot - one had a problem and I just fixed it (I think on the words ובלכתך בדרך but I am not sure).

A friend of mine had a baby who was developing normally and at 9 months stopped developing. Didn’t learn how to crawl, wasn’t growing….they tried everything, traveling to doctors all over the country. She checked all her mezuzot too and they were fine. After a few months she suddenly realized she hadn’t put mezuzot up on new gates. After putting them up he started to improve and BH has pretty much caught up and is fine.

Refuah sheleima! ❤️ Mezuzot are our spiritual protection. If something was wrong, (especially in matters of health), the Lubavitcher Rebbe would always advise to check them.

Thank you very much. This morning he was totally off balance. Panicked and called hatzloah who said go to hospital.

I gave him paracetamol. As soon as I got to A&E he started walking normally. Waited for 3 hours to be told he has transient synovitis.

So thanks everyone.

Has he had any shots at all in the last few weeks? Flu shot? Childhood vax like mmrv? I’ve heard this happening as a side effect from varicella injection.

Glad to hear he’s feeling better.

One of my kids had this several times after standard viruses like a cold. Once we knew what it was, we were able to give Motrin as needed each time.

Yes I need to give him ibuprofen (Motrin). They gave him in the hospital and he started acting loopy though but his gait improved almost immediately.

Be on top of the ibuprofen because it doesn't only help for the pain but for the inflammation too. Several of my kids had synovitis but the pain never got so bad.
