Hi there,

I need some help

I am new to Lakewood and am on United Healthcare through NJ family care.
I have one son in glasses and one son who needs glasses.

How do I go about seeing a doctor?
Do I need to go to a pediatrician first? A referral?
Are glasses covered?

Thank you

You don't need a referral. You can just go to the eye doctor. Be aware that most have long wait times to get an appointment

Most ppl will probably think I'm nuts...but kids with just plain seeing issues (not lazy eye, cross eyed etc, I see a specialist for that,), I go to Visionworks or America's Best Eye dr.
They're literally just clicking through eye charts and the kids are saying if they could see it or not.

And then depending on the kid and whether the glasses are just for reading or for all day, ill either take the prescription to a Jewish store for glasses or buy there. For me it's less about money but more about not waiting around months for appointments. My husband also uses them for checkups for himself.

You can probably call them to see if they take your insurance.

Absolutely
The eye doctors here who preform eye exams are ridiculously overbooked.
Find any eye doctor in New Jersey who does eye exams and takes your insurance . Take your prescription to imperial eyewear or Gefen optical to get up to date glasses. You do not need a referral for an eye exam. Eye exams are covered 1x a year. Certain frames are covered in full but they are not usually in style. You can purchase a frame and your insurance will cover $100 towards the frames.
Don’t bother waiting for an appointment at a local place because you’ll probably be waiting for months and that’s really not necessary.

I’ve used her. She’s good. Haven’t been there in over a year so not sure if they have someone new.

Can you explain more?
what are these two places you are referencing?
how are they different than 'local places'?

Also, so you have phone numbers and names for any of these?

Bump - all the ppl I called are not willing to see my 3 year old.
Do you know of a place that sees young children?

Thank you

Is there a concern? Maybe that age needs a pediatric opthomologist? You would need to use a different doctor then because for routine eye exams you usually see an optometrist.
Your pediatrician could tell you who they recommend for that age if there is a concern.

For glasses, highly recommend Optical Eyeland. They are by far the cheapest and you'll end up with less out of pocket

The place on the corner of Clifton and 4 the street.
Great service, excellent prices and the optometrist was very good.
