Article:
"Shuvael Ben-Gvir, the 18-year-old son of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, uploaded a post to X (formerly Twitter) in which he mocked US President Joe Biden.
"During difficult times like these, it is important to raise awareness for Alzheimer's, a degenerative brain disease which is the most common cause of cognitive decline and dementia in old age. A serious disease which harms a person's functioning and ability," Shuvael wrote along with a picture of the US President.
His father apologized, writing: "Shuvael is my son, beloved to me more than anything. But tonight he made a severe mistake in a post which I deeply disapprove of.
"The United States of America is our greatest ally and President Biden is a friend of Israel. Even if I disagree with his conduct, there is no place for disparagement. Respect for the creations is basic, that is how I educate my children. I apologize for my son's remarks."
The Minister's son later deleted the post and wrote "Mr. President, sorry!""
******************
My commentary: If my mother had been Ben Gvir and I had been Shuvael, she would not have started out by saying I was beloved to her. It would have been more like "I cannot strongly enough express my deep disgust with my daughter. I completely condemn her. I'm just so so sorry to all the people she hurt with her unacceptable intolerance."
So I like the way Ben Gvir handled it. What's your opinion?

"Sorry, Mr. President" doesn't cut it. It's flippant and insincere, practically screaming "Not sorry but my dad is making me say this or I'm grounded."
Better parenting would have been for the son to have been made to write an apology saying everything the dad did and adding "My post was immature, ill-considered, thoughtless and rude, and I sincerely regret my action."
And then he should have been grounded.

You sound like my mother....
How is it a sincere apology if you tell him exactly what to say? And would you really ground an adult?
I think in 99% of homes a post like that wouldn't even get a comment/rebuke from the parent. In this case, I'm not sure whether it did because Ben Gvir is in the spotlight, because Ben Gvir places higher standards on his family, or because he is in the spotlight he places higher standards on his family.
We have seen much more controversial from Yair Netanyahu. I think his father's response is "meh, it's my son, I don't control him."
I think that's part of why I really liked Ben Gvir's response. Because he takes the middle road, one side being letting his son be hefker "I don't control what my kid says!" and the other side being an overresponse to humiliate and punish his son. Of course we don't know what happened behind closed doors, but at least the public response seems to be a golden middle road of caring and educating.
