Looking for a course on how to parent complicated kids, especially crisis type of skills, defusing tension, de-escalation, firm boundaries etc..

Anybody had success parenting a very difficult preteen or teen? I don't want to have to send the child away just because I can't cope.

I can't say I've been successful... It's an ongoing struggle.

Have you tried therapy? I was so hesitant to start for my child but once we found the right person it's been literally life changing. She strongly recommended a psychiatrist and the medication that my child has been put on has really turned things around. And the therapist has been essential in providing parenting guidance etc.

Good for you that your child complied so easily.

Yes, I guess we are blessed in that area. My child is also on the young side, not even a preteen, which is to our advantage in this area I guess. I can definitely imagine the therapy aspect being a struggle with an older child/teen. Wish I could be of more help OP. I hope it gets better for you.

It would be difficult on one foot. I think words can't fully do justice & rather it's an approach that benefits immeasurably from an experiential process.
I understand that that's vague. What I mean though is, while I've always been big into parenting classes, shalom bayis classes etc, Iheart's approach however, has shifted my other learning at a more foundational level in ways others never did. It offers insight into identifying with, while it's sometimes covered up, everyone Innate capacity for resilience & - even in out of control kids or teens - one's inner wisdom, mine as a parent as well. Over time it shifts where my eyes are at towards my loved ones.
(It may sound like other approaches, ie let's say the Nurtured heart approach or something, which if I understand correctly focuses on & gives almost exclusive attention to the positive. However this approach has no techniques. It's more of an understanding about how people operate.)
It might not be for everyone, but it was a game changer for me.

I'm looking for high level skills. This doesn't sound like it.
I need skills for a teen who is having a meltdown, anxiety attack, and I need to de-escalate it so that I don't need to have them go inpatient or lose my mind. I need to be able to keep my calm but also be able to make sure they aren't getting out of control.

I found a very experienced qualified therapist for my child. My child refused to go, but I used the sessions instead for strategies on how to best parent and for support for me.

Can you share the name of the therapist?

It sounds like you really need professional, individual guidance more than a parenting course. You don't necessarily need your child's compliance, you can work independently of your child.
