My 19 year old asd son is having trouble falling asleep. This has been going on for around a month

He takes some valerian (vitamin for sleep) every night but lately it hasn’t been doing the trick.

Any one have any ideas how to calm
His brain?

He’s very high functioning.
& is willing to try anything (well, almost anything I guess)
He says his mind is very busy & can’t settle
So he can’t fall asleep

In general he talks to himself a lot - I noticed tho that lately his self talk is more than it used to be.

He grew out of his developmental ped & only has a family doctor

He does see a therapist & can make an appt but wondered if some like imas had any suggestions.

Step 1: get a recommendation from the developmental ped for a doctor going forward, a psychiatrist or neurologist.

If he's on meds, they may need to be tweaked, with dosage or timing, if this is recent- especially if there are any other generalized changes. Things can change as they grow up, including body size and hormone levels.

I like a lot of the recommendations above, but I would add that some people with busy brains do better listening to a slightly but not extremely interesting podcast or lecture on a low level than to white noise. I listen to the same one for a week, falling asleep whenever. With only white noise, my brain gets bored and starts to worry and swirl- with the podcast/talking, it has something to latch onto instead, but also doesn't care of it falls asleep in the middle.

Magnesium, gaba, Inositol, l theanine, 5htp, melatonin, lemon balm, Chinese skullcap, phosphatidylserine

Meditation, mindfulness exercises, yoga, EFT

How is his diet? Cutting sugar, food dyes, msg can help quiet the brain

Does he have sleep apnea/mouth breathing/enlarged tonsils or adenoids?
